Al Gore has speculated that anxiety of being bullied from President Trump may have prompted the Microsoft founder to row back on his climate crisis advocacy.
Labeling Trump as “an exceptionally unethical commander-in-chief”, Gore cautioned that the president’s endorsement of oil and gas and withdrawal from renewable energy is “significantly hurting” the U.S. economy.
Climate Damage and Economic Impact
In an discussion at the Cop30 United Nations climate summit, Gore noted, “Trump’s already doing a lot of damage on the climate. Perhaps the largest impact he’s doing is to the U.S. itself.”
He emphasized that China is now selling eco-friendly innovations with a cumulative export value that surpasses all fossil fuel exports from the U.S., a pattern that is accelerating quite dramatically.
The Philanthropist’s Surprising Reversal
The tech billionaire, previously a leading advocate in environmental efforts, recently stated for pushing the environmental emergency down the international agenda, to focus on global wellness.
Gore expressed confusion at this change, saying, “The idea of slowing down on climate again puzzled every climate scientist that I know and respect.”
“Yes, the president approves. That may be what the billionaire aimed at.”
Gore observed that after Trump’s re-election, Gates let go of most of his climate staffers, went to the White House, and lavished praise on Trump.
Fear of Reprisal
Gore proposed that Gates, like many wealthy executives, may be worried of being bullied by Trump. “It’s possible that he is really worried that the president will target him,” Gore remarked.
Trump responded to Gates’ change of heart with praiseful social media posts.
Gore continued, “The only rave review of what he released last week was from the president. Yes, he approves. Perhaps what he intended.”
Challenging a Misleading Dichotomy
Gore stressed that presenting the environmental challenge and worldwide health issues as competing priorities is misguided.
“The notion that there is a either-or decision between health and climate has been roundly rejected by nearly all experts in this field,” he explained.
“It’s literally insane that nations are requiring citizens to subsidise the damage of our collective tomorrow.”
Gore pointed out that the prestigious medical journal published a report on the same day as Gates’ statement, detailing the enormous health consequences of failing to address environmental issues.
A Call for Redirected Funding
Rather than diverting funds from climate action, Gore suggested that Gates should advocate for repurposing the massive sums spent on fossil fuel subsidies toward wellness and climate solutions.
“Accelerating solutions to the climate crisis is one of the most impactful ways to improve healthcare in the world,” he declared.
Defending the UN Climate Process
Gore robustly defended the UN climate conference process, explaining that they accomplish far more than they are given credit for.
“The Cop process acts as a nucleus for industry and NGO groups that assemble annually,” he remarked. “Many of them come up with their own agreements that move things forward.”
“These international meetings is one of the key factors that the sustainability revolution has accelerated significantly.”
He added that industries and governments are pushing ahead with innovations and adopting renewable energy and other low-carbon initiatives.
Positive Progress and Generational Change
Gore highlighted what he sees as a “generational change” in the United States, with numerous citizens embracing environmental efforts even as the federal government dismantles them.
He cautioned that Trump might face a “more independent” Congress following recent voting losses for GOP contenders.
“It’s entirely mistaken circulating that in some way we are losing ground.”
Gore praised the progressive politician for his effective campaign for mayor of New York, noting that while he disagreed with some of his proposals, his campaign abilities were impressively on display.
Highlighting Climate Impacts
At the summit, Gore showed attendees with a slide show of devastation linked to the environmental emergency.
Standing before a huge projection screen showing pictures of recent catastrophes worsened by climate change, Gore declared, “It’s completely irrational that we are letting this persist.”
He spoke passionately while displaying visuals of extreme dry spells in the rainforest, Greenland shedding its ice, and devastating weather in Southeast Asia, the Caribbean, South America, the Philippines, and the United States.
“How long are we going to stand by and keep increasing temperatures so that these types of disasters get more severe?” he questioned.
Preparing for Climate Impacts
Gore stressed the need to both adapt and mitigate, but cautioned that if we allow this insanity—treating the atmosphere as a dump—some things will be very difficult to cope with.
Advancing Emissions Tracking
His primary effort at the summit has been to advocate for the Climate Trace project, which tracks planet-heating emissions and air pollutants leading to health problems globally.
“We are very excited about these innovative technologies,” Gore stated. “We have got the technology and the implementation strategies. Some people think we don’t have the government commitment, but as I like to point out, political will is a renewable resource.”
