Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when dozens of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights impacting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend floated over the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and near the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves especially affected by weather factors rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that such operations become not financially viable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
