One of the co-founders of the well-known frozen dessert company Ben & Jerry's has announced that parent company Unilever prevented the launch of an innovative pro-Palestinian ice cream flavor.
Ben Cohen, that co-founded the business alongside his partner, revealed that he will personally create the controversial product as part of a personal series highlighting issues Ben & Jerry's has been barred from addressing publicly.
This latest development deepens the ongoing tension among the world-famous dessert company with its corporate parent, the UK-based consumer goods corporation that acquired the ice cream brand for over two decades.
The co-founders maintain how the parent company along with its ice cream arm the Magnum brand improperly prevented Ben & Jerry's from "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
The entrepreneur announced via an Instagram video how he is creating a new watermelon-based sorbet, requesting consumer ideas regarding naming options plus additional components.
“I'm doing what they were prevented from doing,” Mr. Cohen declared in his kitchen. “I'm making a watermelon-flavored ice cream that advocates for permanent peace for Palestinians while demanding addressing the harm that was done there.”
The watermelon has become an emblem of solidarity with the Palestinian people because of its coloration, which match the colors in the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Several years ago, the ice cream company refused to sell its products in territories under Israeli control, resulting in Unilever transferring their Israel business to a local licensee, thus allowing ongoing distribution in the occupied West Bank.
The new product line is being developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the activist ice cream brand which was first created in 2016 for endorsing ex- US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders with the product "Bernie's Return".
The founder revealed how he will create other ice cream flavors focusing on concerns which the company was silenced from speaking about openly due to corporate restrictions.
This development comes after partner Jerry Greenfield stepped down his position at Ben & Jerry's recently, following many years with the organization, mentioning concerns regarding how its independence was compromised after Unilever's decision to restrict their advocacy work.
Previously, Ben Cohen remarked how "Jerry has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with Unilever was deeply distressing him."
"My heart compels me to continue to work within the organization to fight for corporate autonomy ensuring that it can achieve the social mission, the values that it was founded on and has maintained for over 40 years," he told journalists.
