England to Begin the European Championship 2028 Campaign at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium

England’s men’s team will initiate their 2028 European Championship journey at the Manchester City’s stadium, provided that they attain the relatively straightforward entry for a championship hosted across the majority of the UK and the Ireland.

The Etihad Stadium has not staged an England men’s match since May 2016, when the Turkish team were overcome 2-1 in a friendly, but is almost certain to welcome the England side for their opening fixture on a Saturday in June 2028.

The English side are set to play their concluding group fixtures at Wembley, but, in the event of winning the preliminary round, their last-16 tie would be held at Newcastle’s St James’ Park. Finishing second would mean beginning the elimination stage at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Tournament Launch and Protest

The tournament was unveiled at an event in Piccadilly Circus on the previous evening. High-ranking officials from Uefa and the host football associations were barracked as they entered the site by approximately 50 activists, who called for the Israeli team to be kicked out from international football because of the situation in Gaza.

Signs were raised with phrases saying “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while demonstrators shouted: “Kick Israel out.”

Event Schedule

The first match of the European Championship will be staged at the the national stadium of Wales in the Welsh capital, on Friday 9 June, a match that will include Wales if they make it.

The national stadium will host the penultimate rounds and the championship match, which will be held on July 9, 2028 with a kick-off time at 5:00 PM.

It is expected that an earlier start, which will also be implemented for European club finals from the upcoming season, will cater to households and help engage a broader range of viewers.

Participating Countries

The Republic of Ireland are due to play their first game at the Dublin stadium and the Scottish team would follow suit at Glasgow’s Hampden Park.

The national sides of all four hosts will take part in the qualification process; two automatic spots will be set aside for any that fail to qualify for the finals through the standard process.

Stadiums and Knockout Stage

Villa Park and The North London arena finalize the nine host stadiums. All will hold at least one elimination game, with the last eight staged at the national stadium of each host.

The qualifying draw will be conducted in Belfast, which was removed as a venue city last year when it emerged the proposed venue could not be upgraded in time, on 6 December 2026.

Leadership Comment

“The event will be a tournament for the followers and a celebration of everything we value about the sport – its passion and ability to foster unity.”

More than three million admissions, a all-time high for a men’s European Championship, are expected to be offered to attendees.
