Former Cincinnati Bengals and University of Texas Receiver Jordan Shipley Badly Injured in Farm Accident

Ex-University of Texas standout and professional football player Jordan Shipley is receiving treatment after suffering serious burns in an incident on his ranch near his Texas hometown.

The Accident

According to a family statement, Shipley was operating a piece of machinery when it ignited. Although the 40-year-old was able to free himself, it was after he suffered major burn injuries over a significant portion of his body. He was able to get to one of his workers, who drove him to a nearby medical facility. Subsequently, he was airlifted to Austin, where he is in serious but stable condition.

“We ask for prayers for a complete recovery and the prevention of infections and complications on his road to recovery,” posted his brother, Jaxon Shipley, on Instagram.

Severity of the Burns

It has been reported that Shipley received full-thickness burns to more than 20% of his body. Family members have stated that the primary risk at this stage is infection and pneumonia.

A Look Back at Jordan Shipley's Career

Shipley received Associated Press All-America honors while at Texas in 2009. As a collegiate athlete, he recorded 248 receptions for 3,191 yards and 33 touchdowns. He also ran track for the university.

Selected in the third round of the 2010 draft by the Cincinnati Bengals, he had stints with multiple NFL teams over three seasons. His retirement came in 2014.
