Giants QB Wilson Responds at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Over Quarterback Comments

NY Giants quarterback Russell Wilson didn't mince words on social media this Tuesday, responding to latest comments from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.

"Classless... but not surprised...," Wilson stated via social media. "Had no idea you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the press."

Wilson's response directly referenced the infamous bounty scandal controversy from 2009 to 2011, when Payton led the Saints.

At that time, the league found that the Saints had incentivized players for delivering hard hits on rival teams. As a result, Payton received a suspension from the league for one season.

The Cause of the Recent Exchange

The quarterback's reaction came after Payton made comments following the Broncos' historic comeback win over the Giants. Payton remarked that the team had "found a little spark" with their new QB, who has taken over Wilson as the starting quarterback.

Additionally, Payton implied that he had told Giants owner John Mara that he would rather playing against Wilson over Dart.

"I spoke to John Mara recently and I said, 'We were hoping that the switch would've happened long after our game,'" the coach stated.

Context of the Coach-QB Relationship

  • Wilson joined the Denver from Seattle in 2022 and signed a 5-year, $245M extension.
  • The Broncos went 4-11 in his first season before Denver hired Payton, who was coming back to coaching after a period in broadcasting.
  • The coach replaced Wilson late into the 2023 season, a move that prevented the player from getting injured.

If Wilson stayed on the team by spring 2024, his $37M pay for 2025 would have been guaranteed. Ultimately, Wilson was let go, marking the ugly split between the player and his mentor.
