In spite of global initiatives to shift to clean energy, fossil fuel use reached an all-time high in 2024, jeopardizing international attempts to control global warming.
The share of fossil fuels in power production declined as clean power grew. But overall electricity consumption rose, resulting in increased coal usage globally, according to a recent climate action report.
âThereâs no doubt that we are largely doing the right things. We are just not moving fast enough,â said a analyst from a leading thinktank. âOne of the most concerning findings from our assessment is that efforts to eliminate coal are well off track.â
To reach carbon neutrality by 2050 and restrict global heating to 1.5°C compared to preindustrial levels, more sectors must use electricity instead of traditional energy sources.
However this approach will only work if the global electricity supply shifts to clean sources. âThe trouble is that a power system relying on fossil fuels has huge far-reaching consequences,â explained the specialist. The warning on this is crystal clear. We simply will not limit temperature increases to 1.5°C if coal use continues to rise.â
Although many countries have committed to âphase downâ fossil fuel consumption following a 2021 agreement, certain countries are increasing production of the dirtiest energy source.
Attempts to halt clean power initiatives and cut funding for low-carbon energy are yet to resulted in increased greenhouse gas emissions. However, the report indicated these measures could impact future pollution levels, although different countries might offset the impact by continuing to support renewables.
The good news is that renewable energy generation has grown âexponentiallyâ, with photovoltaic energy called âthe most rapidly expanding energy source in history.â
However this advancement is insufficient: yearly expansion of solar and wind power must increase twofold for the world to meet the required carbon reductions by the end of this decade.
âThereâs no question that recent attacks on clean energy complicate efforts for the international community to maintain the climate accord target achievable,â said a senior research associate. âBut the broader transition is far larger than any one country, and momentum is growing across economies and developing nations, where renewables has become the cheapest, most reliable path to prosperity and energy security.â
Globally is moving too slowly on enhancing power conservation, particularly in lowering greenhouse gases from residential and commercial heating.
Manufacturing pollution are also a concern: the steel sector has been increasing its âcarbon intensityâ â the carbon generated per unit of steel manufactured â despite attempts in some countries to adopt cleaner methods.
Transitioning to electric vehicles is progressing faster â over 20% of cars sold last year were zero-emission. Across China, the share was closer to 50%.
The report also highlighted concerns about the condition of the worldâs âcarbon sinksâ â woodlands, bogs, marshes, seas and additional ecosystems that store carbon. Although countries have repeatedly pledged to protect their forests, deforestation continues, albeit at a reduced pace in certain regions.
World leaders and high-ranking officials will meet in Brazil soon for the United Nations climate conference to discuss how to set the planet on a path to stay within 1.5°C of global heating, as per the international accord.
Each government is required to present a comprehensive national plan on carbon reduction, known as a âcountry-specific commitment.â However, it is already clear that these plans will be inadequate, so the crucial issue will be how nations respond.
