Information Available About the Those Lost of the Bondi Terror Attack

A minimum of 16 individuals lost their lives and in excess of 40 were hurt when assailants opened fire at a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local authorities have labeled a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, officials have announced the death toll stands at 16, encompassing one of the alleged gunmen. Additionally, 42 people with injuries were admitted to the hospital.

Those who died are still awaiting publicly named, but authorities state their ages range from 10 and 87 years of age.

Listed are the individuals who have been named to date.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Reportedly a father of five children, he served as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She described the moments before the attack, stating they were standing when the shooting started. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Officially, the Foreign Minister expressed that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the statement read.

One Child

A child who was rushed to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was among those killed during the attack, as per reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospitals, many are still receiving treatment, with five in serious condition. The injured include two police officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Hailed as a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He described he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
