RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a series of entry passages providing entry to the site... preliminary assessments suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - also known as Daesh - established extremist governance over parts of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action underscores the UK's leading role, and commitment to work closely with our partners, to eradicate any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank every member of our armed forces participating in this mission for their skill and their courage," the Defence Secretary said. "They were among thousands of UK service members deployed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to remove militants who threaten our security, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, all year round, keeping Britain secure at home and powerful internationally."

During December, the US military conducted what it termed a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in the country, after an ambush claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in both countries.
