Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during a recent discussion.
“What reassures me, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are doing well and he will come through this without issue.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where he has been listed as critical but stable.
“Not certain at the moment,” Glenn remarked. “But I will say this, hearing him speak, he felt really upbeat. Furthermore, that puts my mind at ease, given his positive frame of mind and he expresses himself so positively.”
New York police released video stills earlier this week of a suspect in the attack on the player. The reason behind the incident is still being looked into and officials stated it is unknown if Boyd was the intended victim. No one else was hurt according to reports.
The attack took place just after 2am on Sunday morning in the area between Madison Square Garden and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, twenty-nine, was transported to a local hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, police said. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn said Boyd has occupied his thinking “a great deal” since learning of the incident. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a newborn.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he has a new baby,” Glenn remarked. “And I’m thinking about his wife, worrying about his newborn and my priority is his well-being. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There’s a process to this, that I won’t detail, but I’m happy at the fact that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd did not participate during the current season, his first with the Jets, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on 18 August with a shoulder injury that involved surgical repair.
He joined the Jets as a new signing in spring and was projected as a key part of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a training camp practice on 2 August and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad throughout the season while healing from his surgery.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “In fact, he is a regular at our matches. He’s fully engaged. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of UT in 2019. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and later was with the Texans after that. Boyd signed a one-year contract worth $1.6m with the Jets in March.
