While Michel Illouz gradually progressed through the crowds beneath the cypress trees and palm trees at the cemetery in Ra'anana, a urban center located approximately 20 kilometers north of Tel Aviv, he thanked people to as many attendees as possible.
He had extended an invitation to the local community to stand with his relatives in mourning his 26-year-old son, Guy, whose body had been repatriated from Gaza on Monday.
Numerous people answered the call. They filled the roads, processed behind the coffin transport carrying his mortal coil, and converged on the burial site in such large quantities that the initial arrangement to hold the service indoors had to be canceled.
Instead, the event was organized outside, accompanied by the chorus of avian melodies.
This marked the opening memorial service since the remaining score of prisoners were released from Gaza, along with seven bodies. A further 21 of the dead prisoners continue to be lost, but at minimum this family now had a designated location to mourn and honor their son, according to companions.
Guy Illouz, a musician and audio engineer, had been struck from behind at the Nova concert event during the Hamas offensive on October 7, 2023. Earlier that morning, he had reached out to his father from a concealed location to tell him he cared; to offer final words. He was seized, and according to those captured simultaneously, he subsequently passed away from his trauma due to medical neglect.
A family friend of the Illouz household, Michelle, in her fifth decade, commented that it had been vitally significant to them that people attended today. The Illouz household, encompassing Guy's female relatives and brother, had practiced the mourning period, the week-long period of mourning, after discovering of his demise in December of the year before. But now that Guy was at long last back with them, they required "people around them again."
"It warms my heart that you came," stated Michel. "Your presence is deeply appreciated."
He addressed his son. "Beloved Guy," he uttered, using a affectionate nickname, "it's hard for me to envision the days ahead without you. They snatched you from me – they murdered you – they kidnapped me and took my sense of self and killed my inner being and heart."
"I've been left hollow since that senseless shooting by those vicious attackers when they seized you and commanded you to turn around, and then merely shot two gratuitous rounds into your back."
"So I found myself this morning, driving to Abu Kabir medical examiner's office to confirm your identity and part ways. They took off the covering, and the primary view I noticed was that smile of yours, that optimism, that serenity and nobility that so exemplified you."
"I made contact, tried to detect your scent, caressed every bone in your body. I saw you, I was alone with you, and yes, I felt with complete conviction that it was you. Yes, I know, Guy-shuk, that you've come back home. You've come back to your loved ones' arms, to all your friends, and to the millions of citizens whose feelings your experience touched."
In the initial segment of the service, Illouz had concentrated completely on supporting his smaller offspring. He gently touched the locks of his girls, supported his male child, kissed his neck and composed himself for them. But then his voice broke.
"I will long for so much traveling with you through this country, feeling you, listening to your compositions, resting on elevated terrain and lighting the burner to prepare the beverage the way only you mastered – 'Papa, do you see the coffee froth? You have to boil it gently, let the lather develop, then boil it again. Agitate the liquid with spinning actions' – and then your smile while tasting the beverage and your delight in every individual sip."
"Earlier than my exit Abu Kabir today, I fulfilled my commitment. I observed you, inhaled your essence one final moment, and yes, I bestowed affection on the brow. I was could perceive your beauty even in the condition in which you came back."
"Beloved child, I love you so much, I cherish you. I will miss you every moment and tiny segment of my time. Find peace, my sweet one, rest after a passage of multiple seasons through unexplored dimensions to us. I hold you dear, my beloved son, my treasured initial offspring."
