The most severe possible consequences of the global heating for the UK have been mapped by researchers, including a blistering 4C rise in average temperatures to a 6.5-foot rise in ocean levels. A separate possibility foresees a decline of 6C in temperature following the failure of critical Atlantic Ocean currents, which would massively disrupt food production and energy demand.

Plausible Extremes, Not Guarantees

These impacts, certain ones are associated with critical climate thresholds, are seen as unlikely but plausible. The team explained that these models filled a gap in risk assessment that had left the UK ill-prepared for extreme outcomes.

"The severe weather events we have detailed are not forecasts, but they are plausible," said the professor who led the study. "The nation has been making preparations without the frameworks to plan for worst-case scenarios. We've now supplied decision-makers what they need to plan for environmental results they pray never occur, but must not overlook."

A Spectrum of Harsh Climate Projections

Another collection of dire projections maps the projected severity of extreme weather between now and the year 2100. These indicate that temperatures could skyrocket in particular seasons by up to 6C higher than average, while rainfall could be 300% of normal levels.

The probability of the catastrophic events occurring cannot be precisely determined due to a lack of certainty about what action will be implemented to combat global heating and how the climate system will behave. This research was likened to defence planning or scenario planning for economic stability.

Key Possibility Elements

  • 4C Temperature Rise: Worldwide averages rising well above 4C by 2100 could occur if climate action breaks down or if vicious cycles including the tropical forests dying unleash its huge repository of carbon. This would cause extreme and prolonged heatwaves and water shortages plaguing the UK in summer.
  • Atlantic Current Collapse: A major ocean current, the North Atlantic current, is losing strength and showing signs of collapse due to climate change. A collapse starting around 2030 would lead to a 6C cooling in the UK. "Crop production would face immense difficulties and freshwater availability would be fundamentally reshaped," said the professor.
  • Rapid Sea Level Rise: A surge of 2.0-2.2 metres around the UK by 2100 could occur if ice sheets in the Arctic and Antarctic collapse rapidly, inundating seaside communities. Unlike the other scenarios, this possibility is already understood by coastal engineers.
  • Pollution Paradox: Global averages could also be pushed higher by about 0.75C if airborne particulates is sharply cut. This paradoxical outcome occurs because pollution particles from industrial activity scatter sunlight from warming the ground.

Planning for the Extreme

These dire projections could be used to inform the development of long-term infrastructure, for example expanded cities, power generation facilities and urban drainage systems. Awareness of these environmental threats could also hasten the transition to slash fossil fuel emissions.

The study formulated the extreme models using a combination of past data and records, climate models and scientific theory. These outcomes omit potential global problems such as the devastation of food supplies and increased conflict.

This work was commissioned as part of a national risk assessment framework. Previous assessments have stated that not enough attention was being paid to low‐likelihood but high‐impact risks.

Official experts has stated that the UK must "adapt to 2C" and assess the risks for severe warming. Earlier government strategies have been described as being "inadequate" by environmental groups.

A national response noted: "The climate emergency is at the heart of our national priorities, both adapting for the future and establishing itself as a renewable energy leader. It is essential that the UK is prepared for the impacts."
