Out of every adult-oriented animated films I’ve personally watched, nothing has remained with me as much as the terror-laced finale of the explicitly bloody and highly provocative 2022 movie The Unicorn Wars.
Back in the year 2015, this Spain-based filmmaker created a grim, somber and frequently brutal world that included a few small , forlorn hints of hope.
Although Unicorn Wars appears as it originated from a desire to push the medium further, the filmmaker explained that it was actually an attempt to convey a universal, cross-cultural message about “the common origin of every conflict.”
That idea is conveyed via a squad of vividly colored bears , openly modeled after a famous line of lovable characters.
Being raised in a community built around warmongering and the defense industry, a lot of the bears are obsessed with slaughtering the mythical beasts, because of a religious scripture that claims them they previously were masters of the woods, before these creatures forced them out.
Others haven’t fully bought into the brainwashing, , would rather try out drugs and fornicate in the forest.
Unlike their cuddly counterparts, these bright beings have visible genitals , clear urges.
For one notably brutal, skeptical animal, Bluey, the conflict against the unicorns turns into a path to control — and especially to authority above his more tender, kinder brother the bear Tubby.
Bluey acts as a tormentor , an obvious sociopath , and when terror overcomes his group and takes his comrades individually, he takes more and more power for himself, via progressively gory, damaging approaches.
Simultaneously, the unicorns are experiencing their own terror, through an expanding, deadly beast in their forest.
“Initially, it appears as a lighthearted film,” the director said. “But then it evolves into a more serious and sorrowful movie. And by the end, it transforms into a horror film.”
Unicorn Wars begins resembling one of the more whimsical movies from a legendary animator, that discover a naughty glee in permitting cartoon characters curse, fire weapons, or engage sexually.
Afterward it evolves into closer to a more grim work from the same artist, including ever more explicit brutality and a noticeable link to the actual horror of war.
In the finale, it is an outright Grand Guignol bloodbath.
The fear which makes the film a perfect Halloween viewing begins well before than one might expect.
The Unicorn Wars is one for the hardcore lovers of violence, for fans of extreme cinema who desire to view a movie they haven’t ever viewed until now, and are able to withstand a story that pulls unflinching brutality.
View it in a dimly lit space without any distractions, and the conclusion will burrow into your mind and stay with you.
