The Former President's Progressive Alarm Misses The Continent's Real Threat: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a misguided assessment of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "progressive" agendas pose an existential threat to European civilization. Yet, this perspective is based on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The actual danger facing the EU is not societal but technological and economic lag.

The Stark Economic Gap Separating Europe and the US

The data reveal a stark contrast. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by 87%, while a paltry 13.5% increase for the European Union. Over this period, European income per person dropped from 76.5% to just half of the US level. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now has a greater average income than several leading EU nations like Italy and France.

Today, about half of the global 50 largest technology firms are American, while a mere four are European.

The Technological Deficit: The Core Problem

The growing disparity stems from superior efficiency gains in the United States, largely due to technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology dominance is decidedly American. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at more than ten billion dollars, versus just 14 in the European continent.

This gap raises a pressing issue: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, what is the EU stand? Experts widely concede it is largely a contest between two involving the United States and China, with European nations starting at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of the Continent's Innovation Gap

Several major factors explain this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a far deeper and agile network for financing new ventures. The EU has yet to establish a true unified investment market, a factor that caps the scale of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented regulation hamper Europe. A American entrepreneur can introduce a service under a single regulatory framework to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The EU, despite a bigger population, is split among 27 different national regimes, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on risk-taking differ sharply. In some EU nations, business failure was historically viewed with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its ability in breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, one can find reasons for optimism. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have begun to propose substantial change. Notable reports on European competitiveness and the single market point to the necessity of sweeping changes.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, these assets might enable far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent still possesses significant advantages: high-quality human capital, excellent schools and universities, and world-class labs. Coupled with a large internal market and high savings rates, these elements have the potential to unleash a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if Europe does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still dramatically boost economic output by adopting and adapting innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

Europe now stands at a decisive moment. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, Europe's technological decline has been steady. But, if it fails to take decisive action to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could turn into a rapid and permanent decline in world influence.
