LeBron James was aware his historic run of reaching double digits was in danger. At the decisive instant, however, he wasn't bothered.
The right decision involved passing the basketball – and he executed. With that selfless act, the unprecedented record finished.
James's staggering run of 1,297 consecutive regular-season double-digit scoring performances concluded this past Thursday, as the league's career points king had only eight total points during the Los Angeles Lakers' 123-120 victory over the Toronto Raptors. He provided the decisive pass, setting up Rui Hachimura to knock down a three-point shot to win the game.
“Zero,” James replied in response regarding the conclusion of his run. “The team got the victory.”
LeBron had the chance to attempted to win the contest – and extended the streak – with the last shot, but he chose to make the extra pass to Rui stationed in the corner. Rui connected, with LeBron raised his arms with his hands in the air.
You have to play basketball correctly. You always make the right play,” James noted. That has always been how I operate. That’s how I was instructed to play. I've played that way throughout my career.”
James is fully cognizant of his point total he has during a game,” stated Lakers coach JJ Redick. He made the play like he’s done countless times.”
James re-entered the contest one last time with 5:23 remaining, the result along with the historic run both hanging in the balance. At that stage, he had only six points on 3-of-15 shooting by that point.
He scored at under two minutes remaining to level the contest but then missed a mid-range jumper at 1:01 left that might have pushed him into double figures.
He didn’t take a subsequent shot – even though he had a chance. Austin Reaves passed him the ball in the waning seconds, yet LeBron chose to make the pass instead of shooting.
“The basketball gods, if you approach it the proper way, they often bless you,” the coach concluded.
This incredible run began over eighteen years ago. It was easily the greatest double-digit streak the league has ever seen: MJ had 866 straight games with 10+ points, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar had 787 such games, and The Mailman recorded with 575.
LeBron is such an unselfish player,” noted teammate a fellow Laker.
“He’s just playing hoops. He could have shot but due to his nature as a player and his personality as a person, he chose the unselfish play, dished to Hachimura and secured the game.”
Reaching double digits was usually a guarantee early in the final period. During James’s streak, he had reached ten points by the beginning of the final quarter over twelve hundred times coming into the contest.
Yet two of those rare games below ten points after three periods had occurred in the last week: He had nine entering the final quarter against Dallas on 28 November, followed by six going into the fourth against Phoenix on Monday night.
LeBron was able to preserve the record against the Suns. The very next outing, it finished – yet he was celebrating regardless.
I only ever make the best play. That comes naturally, regardless of outcome,” James said. If you make the unselfish play, the basketball gods are always rewarding me.”
