The Princess of Wales's Annual Festive Service of Carols Honours Unsung Heroes

Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her yearly festive musical service at the historic Abbey, with a congregation comprising royals, celebrities and local heroes who have helped their communities.

The large audience will enjoy a selection of traditional hymns, orchestral pieces, and literary excerpts from performers including Kate Winslet and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

A Theme of Love and Generosity

The theme of the service, held in the candle-lit Abbey on Friday afternoon, is kindness and showing love to others.

Among the guests will be a couple named the Cordiners, whose child passed away from a brain cancer, and who founded an organisation, a support fund, to support families who have a child with a terminal illness.

"The time, care and compassion you give, often without fanfare or recognition, and without any hope for reward or acknowledgement, make an remarkable change to the lives of others," wrote Catherine in a note prior to the festive gathering.

A Gradual Return

The Princess of Wales is continuing her own steady comeback to the public eye after her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, in November making her initial major address in two years, in which she discussed recognising the "selfless, commonly overlooked efforts of carers".

Music and Opportunity

Those coming to the Abbey can listen to young musicians supported by the Future Talent charity, established in part by the former royal to broaden opportunities for music lessons.

Carys Wood, aged 18, who performs on the trumpet and is from Wales, has been supported by the trust, with grants helping towards instruments, tuition, and transportation expenses - and she said it was "amazing" to be playing at the concert.

"Musical pursuits are frequently pricey," the musician remarked. She is now a student at the prestigious music academy, and added that "each individual ought to be given the possibility" to hone their artistic talents.

Generations Gathering

Her younger sibling Eliza, aged 11, who performs on the brass instrument, will be present at the Abbey. "I never thought I'd be able to play there in front of so many important people," she said.

Within the audience will be representatives of different generations.

That will encompass nine-year-old Saphia Turner, recipient of a prize for youthful altruism, who produces drawings and undertakes charity feats to collect donations for food banks.

Yuletide Atmosphere and Acts

The Abbey has been festooned with handcrafted festive wreaths, with TV cook Mary Berry and florist Simon Lycett contributing to their design.

Among the musical performers will be singer Katie Melua, choristers from Westminster Abbey and a maritime folk band from Cornwall, the Fisherman's Friends, who said the chance to take part was "the perfect culmination."

This annual carol service will be televised and shown on television on December 24th.
