The United States Proposes 15 Years of Protection Commitments, Says Zelenskyy.

Following high-level talks, Ukraine's leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy has revealed that the US administration has presented a proposed peace plan encompassing defense assurances for the country lasting for a period of 15 years.

Details of the Proposal

The Ukrainian leader stated that during significant talks with US President Donald Trump, he had sought security guarantees for a duration of 50 years. Nonetheless, the current draft calls for a shorter commitment of one and a half decades from Washington.

The specifics remain undefined what these assurances would assume, but the president has been pushing for "defense pledges similar to NATO's Article 5, referring to Nato’s founding principle that aggression towards any member is considered an attack on all.

Progress on Peace Talks

Zelenskyy has said, Washington's protection assurances for Ukraine under the revised 20-point proposal have been completely settled, though the American leader expressed more caution, suggesting the progress was more like ninety-five percent.

Both leaders said that progress had been made during the Florida talks. The US President, nevertheless, warned that there were a couple of challenging remaining points, including over territory.

Prerequisites for Engagement

In related comments, Zelenskyy stated to journalists that a meeting with Russia would be feasible once the US and European leaders reached a consensus on a peace framework put forward by Kyiv to bring hostilities to a close.

This statement comes after Donald Trump told the media that he was of the opinion a meeting involving three parties between Russia, Ukraine and the US could happen once the timing is appropriate.

Background of Engagements

The Ukrainian and Russian presidents have not held direct talks since December 2019. Their last meeting, mediated by the French and German heads of state, sought to restart efforts to resolve the ongoing conflict.

Subsequently, in May 2025, the Russian president refused to go to Istanbul for discussions with his Ukrainian counterpart, dismissing a bold proposal to engage in peace talks in Turkey.

Outstanding Territorial Issues

A key point of contention remains the status of the Donbas territory. Trump said that a suggestion to turn the area, which Russia largely controls, into a demilitarised zone continues to be a topic of debate.

The President went on to say that it will become clear within weeks if the conflict can be concluded.

The involved parties have stressed that the lengthy peace talks would carry on as they aim to achieve a lasting peace to the nearly four-year war.
