President Donald Trump revealed on Sunday that he has extended an invitation the loved ones of a Guard member tragically killed last week to visit the White House.
He mentioned that he conversed with her family and they were “heartbroken”.
Soldier Sarah Beckstrom, twenty years old, was killed in a attack on Wednesday in the nation's capital.
Her fellow service member, Staff Sgt Andrew Wolfe, twenty-four years old, is still in the hospital in serious condition.
Memorials across West Virginia have taken place in their remembrance.
The commander-in-chief said he’s talked about a visit to the White House for the families of both individuals of the state National Guard.
“I stated: ‘When you’re ready, because that’s a hard experience, come to the White House. We’re going to recognize Sarah,” the president addressed the press. “And in the same way with him, no matter the outcome.”
Mourners came together over the weekend at Webster County high school in West Virginia to remember Sarah.
Both she and Wolfe had been fulfilling duties with the West Virginia National Guard as part of Trump’s government program to support policing efforts in Washington DC.
“She was the kind of student that educators desired. She conducted herself with inner fortitude, a bright grin and a upbeat demeanor that inspired those around her,” Hankins, the principal of Beckstrom’s former high school, stated to the Associated Press. “She was kind, caring and always willing to help others.”
Service details for Sarah are still being arranged.
Officials have accused a twenty-nine-year-old individual from Afghanistan with one count of homicide and two counts of attempted murder while armed.
The incident prompted the Trump administration to halt refugee claims and temporarily stop providing visas to owners of passports from Afghanistan.
The airman, a resident of the city, started his military career in 2019 and is a graduate of Musselman high school, per the news agency.
He is still undergoing care and is “battling to survive”, West Virginia governor Morrisey mentioned on Fox News Channel’s The Sunday Briefing.
The state’s top lawyer the attorney general informed a news show that she planned to meet with Wolfe’s family.
Sarah, from Summersville, graduated from Webster County High in 2023 and began her service not long after, serving as a law enforcement officer with honor, per the West Virginia National Guard.
“She had a lot of goodness and she definitely had courage,” the governor told the crowd at the service. “Though her life lasted far too short, she has left a mark that’s going to last forever.”
