A large-scale rescue and recovery operation is currently in progress in the Caribbean region for two missing boats carrying relief goods journeying from Mexico to Cuba.

Naval Search Operations Launched

Mexico has dispatched naval teams and military search aircraft to locate the missing boats, which were had on board at least 9 sailors, per a navy statement.

The vessels had been projected to make landfall in the Cuban capital on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and zero verification of their safe arrival, the statement clarified.

Context of Relief to the Island

The Caribbean nation has depended significantly on Mexico's over the past few weeks, as the island struggles through multiple nationwide blackouts.

"Both captains and crews are experienced sailors, and the two ships are equipped with proper navigational gear and emergency beacons," a spokesperson for the convoy commented.

The nine crew members are nationals of France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Mexican authorities said it has been in touch with maritime rescue coordination centres from each country along with their diplomatic representatives.

"Our team is working closely with the relevant authorities and continue to be hopeful in the crews' ability to reach Havana safely," the spokesperson added.

Previous Humanitarian Mission

Just days before, the Cuban government warmly welcomed and officially received another boat that had delivered 14 tons of donated goods to the country.

That vessel, nicknamed "a modern Granma" following the name of the yacht in which Fidel Castro returned to Cuba to launch the armed struggle in the mid-20th century, carried solar equipment, medicines, infant formula, bikes and provisions.

Wider International Context

Charity groups and individuals have largely spearheaded efforts to ship critical assistance to Cuba since January, coinciding with the time a oil sanctions on the country was initiated.

International organizations have since highlighted ""critical" supply shortages, with in excess of fifty thousand surgeries cancelled in Cuba amid electricity supply constraints.

Foreign policy measures have intensified over the past months, with statements from different leaders highlighting the complicated situation regarding bilateral relations.

In response to certain proposals, a senior Cuban official insisted that "the socialist system of Cuba is not up for negotiation."

Accounts suggest that early stages of negotiations commenced, although their ongoing development remains uncertain.

The naval forces stated it was dedicated to using all of the resources at its disposal to discover the sailboats and guarantee the safety of the people on board.

To date, there has been no official comment on the disappeared vessels by the Cuban government.
