Users Discontinuing Weight-Loss Medications Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that patients who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a major health publication shows that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Individuals using these treatments should be aware of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a reversion to original mass in about 18 months.

Analyzing Treatments

The research, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.

Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually experience a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened regain.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Disease?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have come off the medication report a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger that goes on and you become extremely hungry," said one woman.

This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Interest

Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural management.
