An speeding vehicle while evading police crashed into a crowded bar early on Saturday, claiming the lives of 4 people and wounding eleven in a historic neighborhood of Florida, renowned for its nightlife and visitors.
Aerial surveillance team with the local police department spotted the car operating recklessly on a highway at approximately 12.40am after police stated the light-colored car had been seen illegally racing in another neighborhood, according to a police department statement.
The state road police caught up with the vehicle and tried to execute a maneuver that involves striking a rear panel of a escaping vehicle to cause it to lose control, called a precision immobilization technique, but it was ineffective.
Highway patrol personnel “ended pursuit” as the vehicle sped toward the historic downtown district near the city center, local police reported. Ultimately, the driver failed to maintain control of the vehicle and hit more than a dozen people near the bar, police said.
Three victims died at the location and a fourth person died at a hospital. As of Saturday morning, a fifth victim was admitted in serious condition, and 8 other patients were being cared for at local medical centers but were listed as not critical, police stated. Two additional victims sustained minor harm and refused treatment at the scene. Every one of the 15 victims are adults.
“The incident this morning was a senseless tragedy, our hearts are with the loved ones of the deceased and everyone who were impacted,” the Tampa police chief said in a statement.
Authorities named the alleged driver as 22-year-old the individual, who was booked on Saturday and is being held at the Hillsborough county jail.
Legal documents indicated the suspect has been charged with four counts of vehicular homicide and four charges of serious fleeing or eluding with serious bodily injury or death. Each are serious felonies. Legal representation was recorded for the accused.
“Our entire city is mourning this loss,” remarked Tampa’s leader, who also was the city’s first female police chief, in a post on social media.
“Our condolences are with the victims and families. Official inquiries into this crash is continuing, and we are working to obtain answers,” the statement added.
Lately, certain regions and municipal authorities have advocated to limit the use of rapid vehicle pursuits to protect both civilians and police. Following a rise in fatalities, a 2023 report supported by the US justice department called for law enforcement pursuits to be minimized, explaining that the risk to suspects, personnel and onlookers often outweighs the immediate requirement to apprehend a suspect.
However, Florida has doubled down on the methods, with the region’s road police revising its guidelines to relax limitations on the use of vehicle pursuits and pit maneuvers. The justice department-backed analysis described these tactics as “dangerous” and “controversial”.
