The creative mastermind did not foresee that the Apple TV+ show would emerge as a breakout success. “The viewers have been incredible,” Gilligan says. “It was unexpected the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
With the first season of the popular series coming to an end—and Season 2 officially in the works—the writers' room recently discussed the audience reaction and whether it will influence the storyline of Pluribus.
One could easily to get distracted by the constant speculation and online debates regarding Pluribus. He is doing his best to avoid both.
“The experience is akin to force fed your favorite dessert and being laughing uncontrollably,” he explains. “It's amazing, but I hear about it from others, and that's intentional. I have never Googled myself, nor do I ever intend to. It's quite the opposite. It's a rabbit hole I know I would fall into and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
Regardless of his concerted efforts, there’s it's impossible to ignore the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The most practical strategy is to take it in stride and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“We make no attempt to adjust our writing,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not changed by audience chatter.”
“We prefer to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan concludes.
So if the writers aren’t being guided by fan response, can we assume they have already decided how Pluribus will ultimately end? Essentially yes… in a way.
“We have some compelling concepts about how the story could conclude,” he states. “however, we remain prepared to throw out a solid concept for a more brilliant plan. That has held us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we conceive of something superior and I imagine we will be doing that.”
Then again, if all else fails, Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to use as a backup.
“I constantly suggest that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and we're in there,” Smith jokes, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Alternatively, one could always use the legendary finales?
“I'd love for Carol to open her eyes next to Bob Newhart,” he jokes.
