Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing replay technology.

Video review technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.

Athletes are granted the right to challenge specific rulings from the chair umpire, echoing the practice currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step follows just a season following the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine specific situations, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there is no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can initiate.

Case in Point

A recent case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire watched a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves situations where fans have sometimes been unsure if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
